Don’t Forget About Used Solar Panels

If you are a homeowner who is interested in saving money on your utility bills, one option you may have considered is solar power.  However, one factor that may make you hesitant is the cost; solar panels can involve a substantial financial commitment.  If it’s the initial investment that is holding you back, one alternative to consider is used solar panels.  By purchasing used solar panels, you will pay a fraction of the price of new panels, but still reap many of the benefits in energy savings.  These savings can make previously owned solar panels an option worth serious consideration.

If you’ve decided to consider used solar panels, there are numerous sources for locating them.  Local classified ads or even Craigslist can be a source, but often you will need to travel outside of your immediate area to find them.  A quick internet search can locate websites devoted to solar energy aficionados; on some of these sites, individuals list their own solar panels for sale.  Yet another option is Ebay, on which you can search nationwide or limit your search to a certain geographical range.

One source for used solar panels that is frequently overlooked is insurance companies.  When a homeowner’s solar panels are damaged, the insurance company will pay for their replacement, rather than dealing with the hassle of repair.  In some areas, hail and wind damage can be quite commonplace; these are ideal locations for finding used solar panels.  By contacting insurance companies, you can locate the salvage companies that handle disposal.  Generally, you can buy these solar panels for a fraction of their original cost, although you will need to deal with replacing the glass.

If you are really fortunate, you may be lucky enough to locate solar panels that are being given away.  Once a homeowner has replaced theirs, they may be willing to offer them free, with your only cost being transportation.
